John wrote these epistles to combat error creeping into the church at the end of the first century. False teachers were spreading lies about Jesus, claiming He could not be the eternal Son of God. These new teachers insisted they had superior knowledge of Jesus, challenging all Christians to pursue this “higher knowledge” in order that they might know they possessed true salvation.
Such blasphemous error enraged John, and he determined to set the record straight on how Christians confidently know they possess eternal life. And he clearly instructed how the Christian must engage any false teacher who contradicts the Apostles’ teaching about Jesus Christ.
